Description

Western Pacific 10429 is a 50-ton Rogers ballast car, Hart Selective type.

History

Car 10429 was built by American Car and Foundry in their lot 1468, Specification 684, at their Madison, Illinois plant in April 1936. It is one of series 10401 to 10500. New the car cost $2329.61. The car was retired from revenue service and became WPMP 0293 on February 1973. The last service for this car was on the Elko derrick outfit train. It was purchased by the Museum on March 18, 1980.

  • Technical Data: Type, Ballast hopper car. Builder and date, American Car and Foundry, April 1936. Class. Underframe, steel. Lightweight, 43,400 pounds. Capacity, 100,000 pounds, 1413 cubic feet level full.
  • Trucks: Truck center, 21’ 9”. Trucks, three piece cast steel. Wheels, 33-inch diameter steel. Wheelbase. Journals, 5 1/2 X 10 plain bearing.
  • Air Brake Equipment: Air brake system, AB. Brake cylinder, 10 X 12. Hand brake, vertical staff.
  • Dimensions: Length, 31’ 9” over striker. Width, 10’ 3”. Height, 10’ 0”. Doors, single sliding side and end walk through train doors.
  • Propulsion Equipment: None
  • Misc Data: Coupler, AAR type E-60. Draft gear.
  • Current Condition: The car was reconditioned at the Museum in May 1990 and is in good condition. Sheets are thin due to salt used in the ballast to keep it from freezing. It has seen no major changes since it was built in 1936.
  • Proposed Future Treatment: Maintain in current condition. Lettering needs to be repainted.
