Saving the Last Sacramento Northern Crossbuck

Saving the Last Sacramento Northern Crossbuck

On January January 29th, 2021 the former Sacramento Northern Woodland branch closed its freight operations after 109 years! The railroad is now owned by the Sierra Northern Railway which opted to close the railroad's freight operations so flood control can be improved.

The Museum reached out to the Sierra Northern with hopes to acquire a bit of Sacramento Northern history. The last known crossbuck from the SN was still in active service on the branch line. The Sierra Northern was very accommodating and allowed us to take this crossbuck if we would replace it with a new one.

Days before the planned swap we got word that the crossbuck was knocked over after the most recent storm. Volunteers acted immediately in recovering the crossbuck and brought it home to the museum. The next day the same volunteers returned and installed the new crossbuck as part of the agreement.

What are our plans for the crossbuck? We will be installing it in our future signal garden after it gets some restoration work. We would like to thank the volunteers that had a hand in obtaining this piece of history: Ryan Blake, Curtis Blake, Alex Marcopulos, Joe Cliscagne, Rich Renwick, Cristian Cuadra, and Mike Ninneman.
